About The Position

The position of Nurse Practitioner I in the Department of Surgery requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who will be immersed in the management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients, primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine, California. The surgical patients will include general surgery and specialty surgical services, on all levels of care, including the intensive care unit.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System
  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and flexibility in interacting with physicians, nurses, other paramedical personnel, administrators, emergency and law enforcement officers
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • Skill to clearly communicate medical information to a broad variety of people, both in person and over the telephone
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes
  • Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge, and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties
  • Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Windows and MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, Power point, and Outlook)
  • Familiarity with UC policies and procedures
  • Less than 1 year of experience in Trauma/Critical Care nursing
  • NP National Board Certification (Beginning February 2018): Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP-BC or ACNPC-AG
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification
  • Within six months of hire, ATLS certification

Responsibilities

  • Evaluating care
  • Ordering diagnostics
  • Creating a treatment plan
  • Participating in inpatient sign out/hand-off at the beginning and end of shift
  • Rounding and communicating with the surgery teams/residents/attending physicians
  • Providing surgical consultations on potential surgical patients
  • Participating in resuscitations of surgical patients from the ED and ICU
  • Coordinating procedures (including scheduling operations and other procedures, etc.)
  • Admitting and discharging patients (including admission H&P, orders, discharge summary, instructions, and medications)
  • Triage phone calls from patients and nurses
  • Reviewing critical labs
  • Following up with patients and medical staff
  • Obtaining comprehensive medical histories
  • Performing initial and daily physical examinations/assessments
  • Exploring patient's health needs in a trauma-informed manner
  • Identifying, treating, and managing hospitalized patients
  • Demonstrating an advanced level of medical knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation
  • Participating in the comprehensive care of patients in the inpatient settings and providing multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians
  • Assisting in the operating room, collaborating closely with surgeons and the surgical team to ensure high-quality patient care throughout surgical procedures
