About The Position

POSITION GOAL: The Nurse Practitioner will function in a collaborative role with the collaborating psychiatrist for pediatrics and other members of the multidisciplinary teams associated with the Behavioral Urgent Care (BUC) Unit, Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF) and outpatient. Provide initial psychiatric assessments and medication checks to pediatric and other age populations as necessary at the BUC Unit, PRTF and for CSP patients on an outpatient basis. Be responsible for monitoring and adjusting medication types and doses, per protocol. Assess, diagnose, and make recommendations for physical ailments that arise during treatment of patient. Document all psychiatric evaluations and medication management appointments in the EMR within the specified time frames. Take primary responsibility for the Medication Reconciliation process for those patients seen for medication management. Be responsible for maintaining contact with families of patients, as appropriate. Be responsible for ordering appropriate screening, laboratory tests, and X-rays (not requiring special preparation) as needed. Serve as a consultant to other clinicians/Prairie View staff. Collaborate with other staff members for the purpose of evaluation and treatment. Provide weekend and/or weekday call coverage, if agreed upon. Maintain clinical outcomes within Prairie View standard. Utilize Prairie View resources in a cost effective manner. Actively participate in ensuring that CMS and The Joint Commission requirements are met in the inpatient setting. QUALITY ASSURANCE & PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT (QAPI) Participate in organizational Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement activities. Be familiar with Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement initiatives and goals in work area. Annually review the Quality Assurance & Performance Improvement Plan. Provide monthly consultation to the Director of Nursing Services Be responsible for maintaining referral source contacts and follow-up. Serve as liaison with clinical services, nursing staff, and out-of-system referral sources. Attend team rounds and team meetings and treatment groups as needed. Participate in clinical services meetings. Participate in clinical supervision as needed. Meet for supervision with responsible physician for a minimum of 30 minutes per month. Insure that medical rounds are completed, as inpatient standards require: Progress notes are completed within 24 hours. Evaluations are completed in 24 working hours. Maintain continuing education as needed for licensure. Develop and discuss an annual plan for continuing education with supervisor

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Psychiatric / Mental Health Nursing; must have and maintain an APRN, CNS category certification from Kansas State Board of Nursing.
  • Must have experience working with adults and geriatric populations for purpose of doing clinical assessments, psychopharmacologic prescribing by protocol.
  • Must be competent in observing, interviewing, and assessing patients in order to formulate a diagnosis using current DSM criteria
  • Must possess basic psychotherapeutic skills to establish patient/clinician relationships
  • Must have sufficient psychopharmacologic knowledge to effectively manage psychiatric illness
  • Must be competent in recognizing side effects, adverse drug reactions, and drug-drug interactions, especially as it pertains to psychotropic medications
  • Must have a desire to work within the Prairie View multi-disciplinary team structure, both outpatient and inpatient
  • Must have good listening skills, verbal skills, and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, staff, and multidisciplinary treatment team members
  • Must have working knowledge of the principles of managed care
  • Must possess basic computer skills to utilize e-mail and MyAvatar (or able to be trained during orientation), and to navigate the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Must be willing and able to provide psychiatry support to providers in the community e.g., aging agencies (such as nursing homes), external care providers, and schools
  • Must be able to pass Kansas Bureau of Investigation Screen and the Central Registry Screen for both adults and children.
  • Must maintain current CPR certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with physical assessments of adults and geriatrics preferred.
  • ANA certification as Clinical Nurse Specialist in Child Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing preferred
