About The Position

The Chattanooga Heart Institute offers the most comprehensive cardiac care available in this region. Founded in 1976, we now have six offices in Tennessee and one in Georgia. Our practice is made up of 29 board-certified cardiologists and three cardiothoracic surgeons. We merged with CHI Memorial Health Care System in 2011 which is part of CommonSpirit Health. Job Summary: The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for utilizing training and skills to provide direct patient care under the supervision of a physician. This will be a night time position working 7 days on and 7 days off (after completeing training on days).

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Advanced Practice Nursing Program.
  • Current/valid APN license from the state licensing board.
  • BLS Certification
  • ACLS Certification
  • One year previous experience as an NP in an acute care setting or equivalent RN experience

Responsibilities

  • Manage patients in collaboration with the cardiothoracic surgeons and critical care intensivists, providing specialty care ot patients with acute and chronic problems.
  • Function as the primary responder for all cardiac surgery needs from 7:00 PM - 7:00 AM.
  • Remain in ICU providing continuous active management except as needed to respond to other urgent inpatient/outpatient cardiac surgery needs.
  • Triage or address consults for immediate care or elective care.
  • Participate in inpatient rounding, writing progress notes, admission/transfer/postoperative orders, scheduling surgery and communication necessary for continuity of care. (i.e. sign out at beginning an dend of shift).
  • Collects data pertinent to the patietns' status and performs bedside credentialed procedures.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor and promotes a positive work environment.
  • Performs and/or assists the supervising physician with all aspects of discharge services including discharge planning, discharge summaries, discharge orders and coordinating post-discharge follow-up care.
  • Works collaboratively with clinical teams in managing cardiac surgery patients in the ICU and other inpatient units.
  • Obtain medical histories when necessary.
  • Perform physical exams (within established protocol.)
  • Diagnose, treat and monitor chronic diseases (within protocol guidelines).
  • Order diagnostic tests.
  • Prescribe or recommend medications for treatment (within protocol guidelines).
  • Promote positive lifestyle habits to all patients through education and counselling.
  • Assure charts are signed off by the physician within 7 days.
  • Maintain patient's privacy and confidentiality.
  • Make follow up calls to check patients progress for any urgent outpatient matters.
