About The Position

The Outpatient Mental Health Registered Nurse (CBOC & Telemental Health) is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to assigned patients. This role involves assisting in nursing education, orientation, competencies, and quality improvement initiatives. The Mental Health RN independently delivers patient-centered and recovery-oriented care while maintaining self-awareness in the treatment of patients with mental health conditions.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
• Graduation from a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency.
• Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S.
• Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working in outpatient mental health settings.
• Experience with individuals diagnosed with trauma, addictive disorders, and serious mental illnesses.
• Experience assisting with triage of patients in crisis.

Responsibilities

• Participate in care coordination and liaise with inpatient mental health units to facilitate continuity of care.
• Respond to psychiatric and medical emergencies as directed.
• Document nursing triage assessments, risk screens, clinical reminders, and patient plans of care according to facility policy.
• Facilitate warm hand-offs and telemental health care.
• Lead psychoeducational groups and use therapeutic communication techniques.
• Provide education to Veterans and their families regarding their illness, medications, and treatment plans.
