About The Position

The school nurse is a registered professional nurse certified with the state of Georgia working in a school setting who strengthens, advocates, and facilitates improving and protecting the physical, emotional, mental, and social health of students and staff. The major focus of school nursing services is the response to student and staff accidents, illnesses, and the prevention of disability from said accidents utilizing professional observation and diagnosis that can lead to early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedures. This position is full time and serves grades 5th - 8th. Works closely with the lower school nurse, assisting with 4th grade as needed.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree preferred, but experience will be taken into consideration.
  • Possession of a current license to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Georgia a must.
  • Certified in CPR or BLS a must.
  • Three years' experience as a registered nurse

  • Could advance to a crisis environment depending on individuals' injury, illness or medication needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide health assessments and documentation on a daily basis. Observes students for development and health patterns in making a nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis.
  • Identifies health findings which do not fall within the normal range and reports to parents and administration as needed.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating cumulative health records.
  • Maintain old records for 5 years. Keep daily digital records in the school information system of clinic visits and numbers of students sent home due to illness.
  • Charting of all ordered medications and OTC medications performed with doctor orders signed by parents.
  • Review students' health records and inform school personnel of special health problems and possible school safety hazards. Directs and oversees emergency medical situations on campus. Administers first aid, makes decision to contact 911/EMS, gives report to responding EMS workers and releases care of student to them.
  • An administrator accompanies the student in the ambulance if the parent is not present. Keep lines of communication open between nurse and teachers, nurse and administration, nurse and parents and nurse and other staff.
  • Develops and implements a health course.
  • Assists or leads first aid, CPR and allergies, food allergies and asthma training at least annually or as needed.
  • Maintains, evaluates and interprets cumulative health data.
  • Interprets the health status of students to administration. Initiates referrals to parents and school personnel to intervention, remediation and follow through.
  • Recommends and helps to implement modifications of school process and documentation to meet student's health and State reporting needs.
  • Utilizes existing health resources to provide appropriate care of students and staff.
  • Performs annual immunization audit for kindergarten and reports to the State of Georgia.
  • Reports annually to the Georgia School Nurses Association the number of asthmatics, food allergies, epileptics and diabetic students enrolled.
  • Helps develop school health policies, goals and objectives for the school administration, and procedures and standing orders. Plans and implements school health management protocols for the child with chronic health problems, including the administration of medication.
  • Develops, if necessary, procedures and provides for crisis intervention for acute illness, injury and emotional disturbances.
  • Works with other School Nurse to review, revise and implement overall school emergency policies, including health and safety programs for students and school personnel.
  • Engages in research and evaluation of school health services to act as a change agent for school health programs and school nursing practices.
  • Implements, change and maintains the school medication policy and procedure.
  • Provides information on health.
  • Provides health information to assist students and families in making health related decisions.
  • Participates in health education directly or indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching students to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
  • Serves as a resource person to teachers and administrators on safety and health issues.
  • Medical maintenance. Keep the clinic clean and stocked and well supplied with necessary items.
  • Monitors AEDs on campus, addresses any problems and replenishes supplies
  • Prepares emergency bags for faculty including their students' necessary supplies for emergency use. Works with Athletic Director to supply emergency bags to coaches for sporing events and teams. Coordination Interprets school health services to school personnel.
  • Serves as a health liaison between school, home and administration.
  • Encourages parents to maintain current immunization protection as recommended by the Department of Human Services.
  • Participates in the health aspect of student preregistration.
  • Serves as a resource person to school personnel.
  • Participates selectively in classroom instruction under the supervision of the teacher if time permits.
  • Returns medications at end of school year or when discontinued to parents.
  • Attend faculty meetings when necessary and/or directed by administration.
  • Assist with carpool and cover front desk when no students in clinic. Maintain confidentiality of student and school matters.
  • Comply with conditions as stated in employee agreement and handbook.
