About The Position

The Nurse Manager Surgery has 24 hour responsibility for the direct and/or indirect care of the surgical patient. . The CVOR Heart & Lung Manager provides operational, clinical, and strategic leadership for the Cardiovascular Operating Room service line. This role oversees daily operations, staffing, clinical practice standards, quality outcomes, and regulatory compliance for all cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgical services. The Manager ensures high reliability performance and collaborates closely with surgeons, anesthesia, perfusion, and multidisciplinary teams to support safe, efficient, and exceptional patient care.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited School of nursing
  • Three (3) years clinical experience with evidence of leadership abilities
  • Current licensure to practice Nursing in the State of Tennessee
  • BLS completed prior to going to unit/department and maintained going forward
  • Completion of 4 Hours of Erlanger Online Education specific to Total Ankle, Hip, and Knee for those working in the Elective Orthopedic Center.
  • Tennessee licensure or multistate licensure from a compact state must be obtained within three months of hire for non-Tennessee residents.

Responsibilities

  • Directs day to day operations of the CVOR, including cardiac, thoracic, structural heart, and vascular surgical procedures
  • Oversees case flow, scheduling accuracy, room readiness, equipment availability, and turnover optimization
  • Partners with Perfusion, Anesthesia, and Surgery departments to ensure seamless coordination of complex cases
  • Ensures availability and maintenance of specialized technologies (e.g., heart-lung machines, TEE equipment, endoscopic vein harvest tools, ECMO support systems)
  • Directly supervises CVOR RNs, CSTs, First Assists, and related support staff
  • Develop staffing plans, call schedules, competencies, and ongoing clinical education with help of our CVOR Coordinator
  • Conducts performance evaluations, coaching, and corrective action as needed to maintain high standards of care
  • Ensures staff proficiency in specialized CVOR skills such as cardiopulmonary bypass support, EVH, cardiac anesthesia setup, and high-acuity patient management
  • Leads quality initiatives for cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery service lines
  • Collaborates with Quality, Infection Prevention, and Risk Management to meet accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, STS)
  • Implements evidence based practices to support optimal patient outcomes, including surgical site prevention bundles and high reliability safety behaviors
  • Reviews patient outcomes, case delays, near misses, and coordinates quality improvement initiatives
  • Collaborate with Peri-operative Director to help manage budgets, productivity metrics, supply utilization, and capital planning for CVOR areas
  • Negotiates with vendors, reviews product evaluations, and ensures cost effective use of resources
  • Supports service line growth by evaluating market trends, technology advancements, and new surgical program opportunities
  • Serves as primary liaison between CVOR staff and Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Vascular Surgeons, Anesthesiologists, Perfusion, and ICU leadership
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds, service line committees, and performance improvement councils
  • Maintains strong surgeon relationships to support program development, case expansion, and operational excellence
