The Nurse Manager is a specialized health care professional who adheres to the goals, philosophy, standards, and guidelines of the health care organization. Reporting to the department Director, this role collaborates with the Director and other leaders to provide leadership to the unit(s) assigned by coordinating the care and services of selected patient populations across the continuum of illness. The Nurse Manager promotes effective utilization of health care resources, monitors these resources, and assumes a leadership role with the interdisciplinary team to achieve optimal clinical and resource outcomes. This position reflects the policies and procedures of the nursing department and manages, oversees, and/or coordinates programs such as Shared Governance Program, which may include Nurse Advisory Council, Peer Review, Evidence-Based Practice (EBP), and applications and maintenance for Pathway to Excellence and Magnet designation, among others. The Nurse Manager focuses on daily and long-term performance outcomes and the operation of the unit through measurements of the department. Collaborating with the Director, the Nurse Manager assists with departmental staffing, scheduling, patient care activities, quality strategies, throughput initiatives, the enhancement of patient satisfaction, and employee engagement. This role also involves assisting the Director with the hiring process of new personnel, disciplinary actions, and performance evaluations. The Nurse Manager advocates for and allocates resources to promote efficient, effective, safe, quality, and compassionate nursing care based on current standards of practice and ensures compliance with regulatory and professional standards. By integrating clinical, human resource, and financial data, the Nurse Manager supports decision-making. Demonstrating leadership through conflict resolution and service recovery with patients, families, physicians, and staff, the Nurse Manager proactively removes barriers to effectively implement the strategic plan of the organization to achieve its vision. Responsible and accountable for planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating the management and clinical practice activities for the nursing unit(s) under his/her charge, the Nurse Manager assumes 24-hour accountability by setting measurable goals and objectives to ensure that optimum quality patient care is delivered, and staff is developed to provide care in a professional and caring manner. The Nurse Manager maintains clinical competency to provide patient care as appropriate.
