About The Position

The Nurse Manager-Float Pool will provide managerial and clinical leadership to ensure staff deliver safe, high-quality patient care. This includes oversight of the nursing float pool for the UI Health Care system and the staff who may float across multiple campuses. The Nurse Manager will play a pivotal role in establishing relationships and collaborating with nurse leaders' system-wide, developing operational plans for a tiered float pool, and implementing education, training, and recruitment strategies. The Nurse Manager oversees the float pool and other areas as assigned in the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care. This role collaborates with nursing leadership to standardize operations and improve efficiencies within the Department. This individual assures that hospital policies and procedures are followed. Positions in this job family usually have limited involvement in direct patient care and focus their efforts in planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs and research programs of clinical and health service departments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's in Nursing is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required by date of hire.
  • 3+ years of nursing leadership and management experience.
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership/management and experience in clinical practice required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications.
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred Master's degree (in nursing, MBA or healthcare related) or Doctorate (DNP, PhD).
  • If candidate does not have a master's degree, they will be strongly encouraged to obtain one within 5 years of starting position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, develop, and manage performance of staff within the Float Pool.
  • Lead recruitment efforts for staff and foster a culture that attracts and retains qualified professionals.
  • Manage the talents, strengths, and behaviors of everyone in work groups and provide each employee with the opportunity to contribute to the goals of the department and health system.
  • Actively seek participation from staff on decision-making and customer service improvement activities, provide staff incentives and rewards for contributions toward achievement of service excellence.
  • Develop and implement education and training programs tailored to float pool staff.
  • Assure performance expectations are clearly understood.
  • Hold staff accountable to meet or exceed patient needs/expectations as well as maintain standards of collaboration and respect within and among multidisciplinary teams.
  • Complete staff evaluations on time with written, solid justification.
  • Review attendance data, recognize trends and take appropriate follow-up with staff.
  • Adhere to all University of Iowa (UI) and UI Health Care policies and procedures, SNAHP Manual, Merit Rules, and Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Develop a staffing plan for each tier of the Float Pool.
  • Motivate staff to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of university resources.
  • Provide leadership in the management and alignment of float pool staffing to meet patient needs across multiple campuses.
  • Assist in the development of operational plans to build the tiered float pool structure.
  • Ensure effective onboarding and ongoing professional development of float pool staff.
  • Identify inefficiencies in current practice/processes and develop a means to enhance the process.
  • Partner with Department of Nursing Data Resources, Business Analytics Team, and Central Finance Manager to provide operational data for daily, monthly, and quarterly staffing reports.
  • Collaborate with clinical leaders to monitor patient volume and ongoing changes in patient acuity, and complexity and align float pool staffing model.
  • Develop flexible staffing plan and reallocates priorities to ensure optimal patient care.
