The Nurse in Charge (NIC) is a designated clinical leader for a given patient care area who works collaboratively with the Nursing Director (ND)and Assistant Nurse Director (AND) in planning and implementing patient care at the service/department level. The nurse in charge is accountable for cost-effective decision making regarding daily assignment of staff, use of supplies, and day to day operational decision making. The NIC participates in the clinical patient care standard development, evaluation of outcomes and development of improvement initiatives. The NIC participates in the assessment of staff performance through contribution to individual staff performance reviews. The NIC is accountable for identifying competency issues and participating in the development and implementation of the plan for performance improvement. The NIC reports to the Nursing Director.
