About The Position

The Nurse Extern position at SSM Health is a transitional role designed for nursing students currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program. Under supervision, the extern assists in providing nursing care services to patients, gaining practical experience while preparing for a future RN position with SSM Health upon completion of their studies.

Requirements

• Current enrollment in an accredited school of nursing and completion of first clinical rotation.
• Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) certification from the American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

• Completes patient care tasks based on skills deemed competent in nursing school under direction of RN.
• Contributes to overall quality and safe care for patients by answering patients' calls for help, taking their vital signs, and monitoring their behavior and physical condition.
• Creates a positive patient experience by assisting patients with their activities of daily living including bathing, ambulating, feeding, and personal hygiene.
• Assists and performs procedures such as dressing changes, enemas, ostomy care, and catheter care.
• Establishes a compassionate environment and provides emotional and psychological support to patients.
• Relays information via charting and communicates changes in patient condition to licensed nurses.
• Prepares patients for discharge and accompanies them upon dismissal as needed.
• Stocks and maintains supplies and equipment in accordance with patient care needs.
• Orients new patients and significant others to the nursing unit.
• Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
