The Nurse Extern, is currently enrolled in an RN School of Nursing and has successfully completed a Nursing fundamentals course. When on duty, s/he assists patients with activities of daily living and provides basic patient care designed to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of the patient. The Nurse Extern may also be cross-trained to perform unit secretary clerical duties. The Nurse Extern may perform nursing practice interventions learned within his/her clinical training and successfully validated by a RN staff member. During the final practicum of nursing school and for up to 90 days after receiving the Authorization to Test (ATT), the nurse extern may be preceptored by an RN and perform most aspects of patient care while under the supervision of a registered nurse. The nurse extern must be moved to an alternate position 90 days after receiving the ATT.
