About The Position

This structured, year-long experience is designed to bridge the gap between nursing school and professional practice – offering strong clinical exposure, mentorship, and a direct pathway toward RN opportunities within our health system. Program Structure First 6 Months Cohort-based rotations through various acute care units Exposure to specialties such as medicine, neurology, surgical, transplant, cardiovascular, trauma, and rehab Multi-hospital experience across Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, Menomonee Falls, and West Bend Regular cohort touchpoints and program leader support Final 3 Months Focused placement in an area aligned to your interests and organizational needs Deeper clinical skill development Enhanced preparation for RN transition Program Completion Graduation celebration Opportunity for potential RN placement within the Froedtert Health system Position Summary The Nurse Extern is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for an identified group of patients in assigned patient care area under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing
  • Anticipated graduation date: Spring 2027 (required for this cohort)
  • Graduates awaiting NCLEX or preparing to retake the NCLEX (second attempt) may be considered for placement upon program completion, if applicable
  • 4-year program: Two acute care medical-surgical clinical rotations OR one medical-surgical rotation plus one rotation pertinent to the area of interest
  • 2-year/Accelerated program: One medical-surgical clinical rotation Plus pertinent work experience
  • At least one rotation must include medication administration
  • Coursework must include patient care theory, assessments, care planning, and documentation
  • Ability to perform basic patient care tasks
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and concentrate in a fast-paced environment
  • Physical ability to stand/walk for extended periods and assist with patient positioning
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) required within 90 days of hire

Nice To Haves

  • Six months or more experience as a Nursing Assistant preferred.
  • Wisconsin Nursing Assistant Certification preferred OR documentation of successful completion of basic nursing coursework meeting WI administrative code criteria
