About The Position

The Nurse Extern position at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital is designed for individuals currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program. This part-time role involves working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse to assist with various patient care activities, including vital sign monitoring and medication administration. Externs will work full-time for 6-8 weeks during the summer in a designated role, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a clinical setting.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Nursing.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Surgical Course that includes pharmacological concepts.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to interruptions and changing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Completes activities of daily living, vital sign completion, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of the Registered Nurse.
  • Collaborates with the Registered Nurse in establishing a plan of care based on health, education, and developmental needs.
  • Evaluates patient response to interventions and communicates observations to the Registered Nurse.
  • Develops delegation skills appropriate to Health Unit Coordinators, Nursing Assistants, and technical roles on the unit.
  • Administers medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse, ensuring clinical judgment and proficiency are evaluated.
  • Manages an increased number of patients and incorporates time management principles into shift routine.
  • Collects and synthesizes relevant patient data to accurately identify patient status and needs.
  • Participates in emergency situations under appropriate supervision.
  • Performs patient positioning and transporting duties, utilizing proper lifting techniques.
