About The Position

The Nurse Extern position at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital is designed for nursing students who are in their third year or higher. This role involves working collaboratively with the patient care team and performing direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. The extern will document patient care, monitor and communicate patient conditions, and assist patients with daily living activities. The position emphasizes the importance of maintaining professional relationships with patients, families, and coworkers, and includes responsibilities such as patient education and advocacy for patient well-being.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: School of Nursing 3rd year student or higher.
  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Certifications: Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP).

Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with the patient care team.
  • Performs direct patient care under the direction, delegation and supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Documents patient care given.
  • Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to supervising RN.
  • Maintains positive professional relationship with patient/families, coworkers, and health care team.
  • Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
  • Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
  • Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
  • Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
  • Supports performance improvement philosophy.
