About The Position

The Nurse Extern Summer Program at Advocate Christ Hospital & Medical Center is designed for nursing students currently enrolled in an accredited program. This part-time position allows externs to work full time for 6-8+ weeks during the summer, gaining hands-on experience under the supervision of Registered Nurses. The externs will engage in various patient care activities, collaborate on care plans, and develop essential nursing skills in a supportive environment.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Nursing.
  • Anticipated graduation in May 2026.
  • Successful completion of a Medical Surgical Course that includes pharmacological concepts.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to adapt to changing priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Completes activities of daily living, vital sign completion, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of the Registered Nurse.
  • Collaborates with the Registered Nurse in establishing a plan of care based on health, education, and developmental needs.
  • Evaluates patient response to interventions and communicates observations to the Registered Nurse.
  • Develops delegation skills appropriate to Health Unit Coordinators, Nursing Assistants, and technical roles on the unit.
  • Administers medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse, with evaluated clinical judgment and proficiency.
  • Manages an increased number of patients and incorporates time management principles into shift routine.
  • Collects and synthesizes relevant patient data to accurately identify patient status and needs.
  • Participates in emergency situations under appropriate supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Performs patient positioning and transporting duties, utilizing proper lifting techniques.
