About the position
Corewell Health is pleased to announce our 2025 Summer Immersion Program for nursing students looking to enhance their academic knowledge and further develop their clinical skills through a hands-on experience with a nurse preceptor. The Nurse Extern will be paired up with a Nurse Preceptor for this 10-week program beginning May 19, 2025, working (3) 12-hour shifts per week. Working hours are generally 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. We will offer placements in a variety of clinical specialties at each of our 8 hospital campuses which may include Med/Surg, Progressive Care, Critical Care, and Emergency. Applications will be accepted through Friday, March 7, 2025. Orientation begins on May 19, 2025.
Responsibilities
- Under supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs various nursing care tasks and treatments on assigned patients.
- Performs routine bedside nursing activities including bathing and personal grooming of patients.
- Ambulates, moves, and turns patients.
- Assists patients with bedpans or urinary devices.
- Makes patient beds and cares for personal property.
- Assists in performing additional nursing procedures such as catheterizations, suctioning, irrigating colostomies, applying restraints, giving enemas, douches, and sitz baths or pericare.
- Takes vital signs and records intake and output.
- Applies and changes sterile and non-sterile dressing using appropriate technique.
- Performs more complex nursing procedures and treatments after theoretical preparation and supervised clinical experience.
- Keeps professional nursing staff advised of current patient status as well as changes in patient condition as they occur.
- Performs assessments and documents accurate, complete, and concise patient information on appropriate forms.
- Participates in nursing staff conferences, in-services, and educational opportunities.
- Ensures the optimum utilization of personnel, supplies, and equipment.
- Provides a copy of current school transcript to supervisor at the end of each marking period to confirm continued eligibility.
- Assists in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
- Assists in pre-operative and post-operative care.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled and attending an accredited school of registered nursing.
- May be enrolled in an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (BSN) or Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) Program.
- Requires evidence of successful completion of adult medical-surgical rotations – theory and clinical.
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS OR American Red Cross (ARC) BLS, required and must be valid through July 2025.
