About The Position

The Nurse Extern position in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Advocate Aurora Health is designed for nursing students who are in their final year of an accredited nursing program. This part-time role allows externs to gain hands-on experience under the supervision of Registered Nurses, focusing on patient care, medication administration, and collaboration in care planning. Requirements

• Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved nursing program.
• Successful completion of a Medical Surgical Course that includes pharmacological concepts.
• Good interpersonal skills and adaptability to changing priorities.

Responsibilities

• Completes activities of daily living, vital sign completion, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of the Registered Nurse.
• Collaborates with the Registered Nurse to establish a plan of care based on health, education, and developmental needs.
• Evaluates patient response to interventions and communicates observations to the Registered Nurse.
• Develops delegation skills appropriate to Health Unit Coordinators and Nursing Assistants.
• Administers medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse, ensuring clinical judgment is evaluated prior to administration.
• Manages an increased number of patients while incorporating time management principles into the shift routine.
• Collects and synthesizes relevant patient data to accurately identify patient status and needs.
• Participates in emergency situations under appropriate supervision of a Registered Nurse.
• Performs patient positioning and transporting duties, utilizing proper lifting techniques.
