About The Position

The Nurse Extern position in the Medical Surgical ICU (MSICU) at UNC Rex Healthcare is designed for prelicensure nursing students to gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting. The extern will work under the supervision of registered nurses, providing direct and indirect patient care while enhancing their foundational nursing education. This role aims to prepare nursing students for their future careers by allowing them to apply their knowledge in a real-world environment, particularly in a high-acuity unit that serves complex medical and surgical patients.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care delivery.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to lift and carry 40-50 lbs.
• Frequent to continuous standing/walking.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information while providing care and reports significant changes to a registered nurse or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provides care and treatments to patients as outlined in the plan of care, including vital signs measurement, specimen collection, and simple wound care.
• Delivers direct personal care to patients for daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and feeding.
• Performs indirect care tasks including cleaning the work area, changing linens, and transporting patients or supplies.
• Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or provider and documents patient understanding.
• Assists providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procures equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, aids patients in reality orientation and participates in behavior modification plans.
