About The Position
The Nurse Extern in the Float Pool at Delray Medical Center is a vital role designed for individuals currently enrolled in an RN School of Nursing and who have successfully completed a Nursing fundamentals course. This position is focused on delivering high-quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of patient care services that are essential to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern assists the nursing staff in providing comprehensive patient care in accordance with their skills and training. As the Nurse Extern gains competency and knowledge from their school curriculum, they may be permitted to perform higher-level procedures. During the final practicum of nursing school, the Nurse Extern may be preceptored by an RN, allowing them to perform aspects of patient care as deemed competent, with continued supervision. It is expected that the Nurse Extern will transition to an RN position within four months or less of their graduation date. Should the Nurse Extern be unable to move into an RN role after this period, they will be required to transfer to an alternate position and will not be able to continue in the Nurse Extern role. This position is designed to provide a supportive and enriching environment for nursing students to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting, ultimately preparing them for their future careers as registered nurses.
