About The Position

The Nurse Extern in the Emergency Department at UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper is a non-exempt position designed for nursing students entering their last year of nursing school. The extern will perform a variety of patient care and administrative support functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The role involves assisting patients with personal care, performing basic nursing skills, and providing administrative support to promote patient health and wellness. The extern will work collaboratively with team members to enhance patient experiences and outcomes, ensuring a safe environment and adherence to regulatory requirements.

Requirements

• Must be a nursing student entering their last year of nursing school.
• Graduation date must be between December 2026 and May 2027.
• BSN students must have completed their 3rd year; ASN students must have completed their 1st year.

Responsibilities

• Assists patients with personal care as needed for optimal recovery during hospitalization.
• Performs basic nursing skills as delegated by an RN.
• Provides for a safe environment and safe delivery of care.
• Performs administrative support functions.
• Maintains necessary skills and competencies.
• Works with team members to develop or improve processes to assure a remarkable patient experience.
• Creates and maintains a healthy work environment that results in improved patient outcomes.
• Collaborates with physicians to develop or improve processes surrounding care of patients.
• Coordinates the provision of patient care through delegation, problem solving, time management, and organizational skills.
• Partners with family and patients to resolve concerns related to the delivery of health care.
• Ensures timely and consistent communication to provide exemplary care.
• Monitors operations on a daily basis and provides guidance to the nursing team.
