About The Position

The Nurse Extern position at UNC Health Care is designed for prelicensure nursing students to gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting. Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED
• Current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care delivery.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to lift and carry 40-50 lbs.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in a healthcare setting (not required but preferred).

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information while providing care and report significant changes to a registered nurse or provider.
• Assist patients and their families during admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Provide care and treatments as outlined in the plan of care, including vital signs measurement, specimen collection, and simple wound care.
• Deliver direct personal care for daily living activities such as bathing, dressing, and feeding.
• Perform indirect care tasks including cleaning work areas, changing linens, and restocking supplies.
• Reinforce routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or provider and document patient understanding.
• Assist healthcare providers with routine examinations and emergency situations.
