About The Position

This position will work 50% in the Nurse Educator role and 50% bedside nursing. Under the director of the Emergency Department Director, is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating an organized program for staff education, directed toward the achievement of professionals and support staff education. Coordinates, facilitates, and tracks all education for the emergency department nurses, ED technicians, and care support roles. This position operates on adult learning theory in evaluating education needs of staff developing and teaching educational programs and in-services. This position maintains effective relationships with staff, peers, preceptors and nursing directors to effectively promote staff education.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • Required Experience: 5 – 8 years of experience.
  • Special Skills and Abilities: This nurse should be knowledgeable in flow of the emergency department. Must be aware of current certifications and courses required to work within the emergency department. Ability to accommodate the learning styles of new staff is vital to success in this position.
  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: BLS certification required; RN license in IL required.

Responsibilities

  • Orientation: Collaborates with preceptors to adapt the structure of orientation program and revise department orientation dependent on changing patient population. Stays current with new clinical knowledge so it can be applied in the clinical setting.
  • Education: Incorporates principles of adult learning in the planning of implementation and evaluation of educational programs. Remains up-to-date on current evidence-based practice and disperses this education to nursing staff.
  • Competency: Develops and implements structured unit competencies for care of the emergency department patient utilizing evidence-based practice standards. This will be based on the needs of the unit and professional growth of staff.
  • Collaboration: With the Emergency Department Director and other resource personnel for development and review of policies, guidelines, and protocols related to new technology, evidenced-based care, patient case studies, and quality.
  • Liaison: With administration and departments in planning seminars, workshops, educational programs that meet the needs of the unit’s responsibility. Acts as the liaison between physicians, staff, other collaborative facilities, and ED leadership.
  • Monitoring: Staff education and professional outreach program offerings. Recommends direction and program focus with the changing needs of the unit.
  • Facilitating: On-going regulatory mock codes/simulation to promote interpersonal growth and development. Conducts annual unit-based competencies to meet the needs of the unit’s responsibility. Engages nurses, ED technicians, and care support roles in practices that enhance patient care, communication, and safety outcomes.
  • Participates: in recruitment and selection of staffing for units. Organize, review, update, and evaluate quality initiatives to include but not limited to chart audits, data collection and dissemination, and data analysis and action planning. Unit educational record keeping, keeping in line with the organization.
  • Work 4 scheduled shifts per month as staff nurse on ED unit, 2 shifts must be weekend dates.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
