About The Position

The Pediatric ICU at VCU Medical Center provides the only full-service children’s care in Central Virginia, including a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma and Burn Center. Our PICU has been honored with the Silver Beacon Award, while our organization has achieved Magnet designation for the fifth consecutive time and recognition as a Level 1 Children’s Surgery Center. Our 24-bed PICU is dedicated to caring for the most critically ill infants, children, and adolescents. We serve patients with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions while guiding families through some of their most difficult experiences. Our nursing team delivers exceptional care by blending advanced clinical expertise with compassion, emotional insight, and strong psychosocial support for patients and their caregivers. The Nurse Clinician demonstrates a high level of expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of the complex patients and their responses to actual or potential health problems. This role assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. The Nurse Clinician provides direction, education, leadership and accountability for program development, implementation and evaluation in area of responsibility. Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
  • Current RN Licensure in Virginia
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
  • 5 years nursing experience required
  • Minimum of one year experience in the position's specialty patient population or practice setting
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Must be enrolled in a Master’s degree program at the time of application and must be complete within 36 months of hire.
  • Has full authority and accountability for direction and leadership of program planning, guideline development, setting of practice standards within the confines of organizations/divisions/units mission, goals and objectives.
  • Manages human, fiscal and other resources to ensure quality programs/processes/services with measurable positive outcomes.
  • Will generally work day shift, but may require flexibility for special projects or to meet organization and staff needs.
  • Age Specific groups served: As appropriate based on unit assignment.
  • Physical: Lifting 20-50 lbs. Lifting 50-100 lbs.
  • Activities: Prolonged standing, Prolonged sitting, Frequent bending, Walking (distance), Climbing (steps, ladder, other), Reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive)
  • Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, Reasoning, Problem solving, Hearing, Speak clearly, Write legibly, Reading, Logical thinking
  • Emotional: Fast pace environment, Steady pace, Able to handle multiple priorities, Frequent and intense customer interactions, Noisy environment, Able to adapt to frequent change

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in staff education and professional development (orientation, preceptorship, in-services education, etc.)
  • Academic health care experience
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or a related field.
  • If the master’s degree is not in Nursing, then it is required to have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing
  • Special consideration will be given for applicants enrolled in Baccalaureate to Doctoral programs who will not attain a Master’s degree and may require longer than 36 months to complete the terminal degree.
