Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Attendant assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care, and helps maintain a safe and clean environment. This role functions as a co-worker to the nurse and a key member of the nursing care team, organizing patient care assignments, setting priorities, and alerting the RN to changes in patient status. The attendant assists with ADL needs such as preparing and assisting with meals, providing nourishment, bathing, oral hygiene, toileting, maintaining mobility, and grooming. They also maintain patient care units in a neat and orderly condition, including changing beds, cleaning tables, stripping units upon discharge, and preparing rooms for new admissions. Additionally, the Nurse Attendant performs selected procedures and simple treatments like taking vital signs, measuring intake/output, obtaining specimens, administering enemas, weighing patients, performing simple dressings, and respiratory treatments. The role involves assisting patients with movement, serving meals, transporting patients, reporting damaged equipment, maintaining non-patient rooms, cleaning patient care equipment, performing constant observation, and post-mortem care. The attendant is also expected to participate in continuing education by attending orientation courses, completing annual mandatory educational requirements, and attending staff development programs.
