About The Position

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a Nuclear Waste Specialist to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS). The Nuclear Waste Specialist is r esponsible for ensuring that work in the field is in compliance with Waste Acceptance Criteria per solid waste guidelines/procedures. They coordinate waste shipments including but not limited to Green Is Clean, Hazardous, Mixed, Low Level and RAD Soil.

Requirements

  • BS from an accredited university in science or related experience in waste handling or related, such as radiological control, chemical handling, logistic, or transportation; or BS from an accredited university in a non-technical discipline and experience in waste handling or related, such as radiological control, chemical handling, logistic, or transportation; or High School Diploma/GED and experience in waste handling or related, such as radiological control, chemical handling, logistic, or transportation.
  • Successful completion of facility qualification process which includes extensive classroom, formal on-the-job training, and oral board examination conducted by facility management.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates and supervises the activities for the Waste Program for assigned facility/area
  • Conducts pre-job briefs to instill work safety standards and actions.
  • Ensures that Waste Verifiers are trained and qualified for assigned work activities
  • Coaches, teaches, mentors and provides technical and administrative expertise to Waste Verifiers and Waste Generators
  • Reviews and approves work packages for waste activities
  • Comprehends and follows current administrative waste procedures
  • Interfaces with scheduling to develop accurate work schedules
  • Informs management of issues or concerns in the areas of planning, scheduling, documentation, and training. Provides recommended solutions
  • Cognizant of assigned on and off shift work evolutions involving waste activities to ensure work is done per solid waste criteria.
  • Communicates with other support organizations to ensure activities are started and completed as scheduled
  • Performs initial investigations of abnormal events such as spills and process contamination
  • Performs periodic rounds of the facility to observe waste activities and ensure work is being performed safely and in accordance with approved procedures
  • Ensures Waste Verifiers/Generators review changes to operating procedures and plant modifications.
  • Initiates work requests as needed to support the Waste Program
  • Performs inspections and surveillance of Radiation Material Areas, Satellite Accumulation Areas, Staging Areas, to ensure compliance
  • Incorporates Waste Minimization into planning/work efforts
  • Oversees the Rejected Waste Program
  • Other duties as assigned
