About The Position

The Nuclear Test Engineer position supports various programs, including Virginia, Delivered Ship availabilities, MTS, Columbia and Maintenance and Modernization programs. The successful candidate filling the Nuclear Test Engineer position will be required to perform detailed technical work reviews for Nuclear and non-Nuclear jobs such as, but not limited to, Nuclear Construction and Repair Notices (NCR), Deficiency Forms (DF), Drawing reviews, Work Order management, software and hardware expediting in support of Work Order schedules, change processing, and work completion closeout. The Nuclear Test Engineer ensures that work directed in areas controlled by the Ships Systems Status Report (SSSR) is correctly administered and reviewed. In this capacity the candidate will review non nuclear work instructions for SSN 688, VIRGINIA, OHIO and SEAWOLF availabilities to ensure work is not being performed in areas or on systems controlled by the ship specific Ships System Status Report (SSSR). If the items reviewed directed work in areas or systems controlled by the SSSR, the Nuclear Test Engineer serves as the liaison between Nuclear Engineering and non-nuclear engineering and planning departments to ensure any required radiological releases were directed and the proper SSSR signoff was incorporated into the TWDs. The Nuclear Test Engineer must be familiar with nuclear and non- nuclear interface to ensure proper assignment of work. The Nuclear Test Engineer also supports VIRGINIA Class PSA and other post-criticality work by researching work packages and providing information to Detail Planning to ensure that nuclear and radiological work is controlled properly. The Nuclear Test Engineer assists the engineers in the group by evaluating tasks and advising on the nature of design packages and their impact on nuclear and radiological work boundaries. In order to perform these functions, successful candidates will be required to interface with Operations, Engineering, Design, Material Systems, Configuration Management, Quality and other support organizations at various levels of management. The Individual filling this position will be called upon to represent Nuclear Engineering at various Construction status, Process Improvement and Program Review meetings. The successful candidates will be expected to be aware of and in compliance with those attributes of Safety, Quality, Cost, Schedule and Process Improvement as they apply to their position.

Requirements

  • High School diploma
  • 6 years of experience Submarine Construction, Submarine Maintenance, or Submarine Operations, in the trades, shipyard, and military industries.
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to read blueprints
  • Good organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Nuclear engineering, radiological controls department or related Navy experience
  • Experience preparing job summaries, technical work documents, and component unit phase work instructions, coordination and preparation of task material lists, and determination of trades involved in task performance and estimating man-hours per trade step for tasks within each component unit phase.
  • Knowledge of radiological controls is desirable
