About the position

The Nuclear Safety Inspector at Idaho National Laboratory plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and compliance of nuclear operations. This position involves implementing a risk-informed, performance-based oversight model across various disciplines that impact safe nuclear operations, including engineering, maintenance, operations, and emergency planning. The inspector will conduct inspections, review safety documentation, and advise senior management on nuclear safety issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight of and conduct inspections of INL Nuclear Safety Operations observing the INL Integrated Oversight Process.
  • Review safety analysis reports (SARs), technical safety requirements (TSRs), and other safety basis documents that support DOE regulations.
  • Inspect facility hazard categorizations for conformance to applicable Department of Energy (DOE) regulations.
  • Review operating event timelines and causal evaluations to ensure appropriate actions are taken to prevent recurrence of operating events.
  • Identify and develop performance trends through corrective action documentation and incident reports.
  • Develop metrics to assess nuclear safety performance and inspection procedures for conducting nuclear safety inspections.
  • Advise and assist senior management on laboratory and national issues related to Nuclear Safety Operations.

Requirements

  • Experience in nuclear safety operations and oversight.
  • Knowledge of DOE regulations and nuclear safety standards, specifically 10CFR830.
  • Ability to conduct inspections and review safety documentation effectively.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify performance trends and causal evaluations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) or similar regulatory bodies.
  • Familiarity with the Integrated Oversight Process at INL.
  • Strong communication skills for advising senior management.
