About The Position

The person selected for this position will provide project engineering support for the Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) project’s technology maturation and demonstration formulation efforts within the Exploration Technologies & Systems Development Branch (ST20) as a part of MSFC’s Science and Technology Office. The successful candidate will provide expertise in nuclear operations and technology and will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, cross-program elements, and customers. The candidate will also participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and will review trade studies. The candidate will also support external agency coordination with DoW, DoE and others as assigned.

Requirements

  • A degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering, or a BS degree in a related technical discipline from an ABET accredited institution is required.
  • Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS degree with at least 17 years of relevant experience in nuclear technology, operations and logistics.
  • Significant understanding of the operation of nuclear systems and the ability to extend that knowledge to space applications, namely nuclear thermal and nuclear electric propulsion.
  • Strong project management, communication, teamwork, and productivity skillsets are required.
  • Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%).
  • Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).
  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%).
  • Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%).
  • Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
  • Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
  • Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%).
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in DoW, DoE or other external agencies is desired.
