About The Position

Performs nuclear medicine procedures and studies to obtain information for use in diagnosing and treating illnesses. Administers radiopharmaceuticals and operates radiographic equipment according to policy and procedures.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved program in nuclear medicine Required
  • Qualified by education, training, or experience to work with adult and/or geriatric patient as specialty assignment dictates Required
  • Registration by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) required or attained within three (3) attempts at passing the registration examination or twenty-four (24) months of employment. Required
  • Current CPR/BLS certification Upon Hire Required
  • At least 1 year experience Experience in patient care as obtained through completion of a Nuclear Medicine Program Required

Responsibilities

  • Reviews patient's medical record and physician’s request prior to procedure to obtain and record identifying information required for the treatment and patient records.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills and maintains competencies required to provide care appropriate to age of the patients served within department.
  • Determines proper settings; selects and prepares equipment and supplies as needed for each exam/procedure. Exercises judgment in selecting proper equipment/computer settings.
  • Prepares and administers radioactive agents or preparation of kits and IV injection of agents to ensure accurate diagnostic testing/imaging as ordered by physician, consistent with patient care policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management, infection control practices, patient safety practices and departmental activities.
  • • Explains procedure to patient/family member in a caring, compassionate, and sensitive manner.
  • • Positions and immobilizes patient.
  • • Prepares radiopharmaceuticals as prescribed.
  • • Performs procedures (nuclear stress test, thyroid studies, bone scan, etc.); operates nuclear detection, imaging, and computer processing equipment for nuclear radiologic studies and procedures to produce scanogram and measure isotopes concentration in specified body area to provide the Physician with diagnostic images to identify and/or plan appropriate treatment for the patient’s condition.
  • • Observes patient and equipment during procedure.
  • • Reports adverse or any unusual reactions or events.
  • • Perform all processing of images for viewing in accordance with established procedures.
  • • Recognizes and corrects technical errors to ensure a clear and accurate scan/image.
  • • Provides staff and patient protection in accordance with prescribed radiation safety standards. Adheres to standards for radiation safety and for appropriate waste separation and disposal of radioactive agents by performing specific tasks mandated by regulatory requirements.
  • • Ensures accurate documentation in performing and processing all procedures in order to capture all charges and other relevant information.
  • • Operates the Radiology Information System to enter required test data and patient information, using all appropriate modules with accuracy. Ensures patient information and images are correctly transmitted to PACS system. Documents care based on standards of care and practice and/or clinical priorities for documentation (assessment, procedure, and patient's response during procedure).
  • Responds and/or participates with medical emergencies. Initiates and/or assists with CPR/BLS as required.
  • Prepares and maintains adequate records of patient files, tape numbers, drug usage and other required records, reports and files for administrative and compliance purposes. Utilizes patient computer systems to enter and retrieve data.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
  • Participates in quality/performance improvement. Collects quality data for monitoring performance improvement and to produce the best value service.
  • Assists with maintenance and care of department equipment and utilizes supplies in a cost effective manner. Maintains stock level of supplies and materials. Order special isotopes as required for special procedures.
  • Provides support to radiology and other medical and hospital staff to provide clinical assistance as needed. Assists in orientation and supervision of new staff members and students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of their training.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly, safe environment for patients and personnel. Adheres to established department policies, procedures, objectives, compliance/quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
  • Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow-up.
  • Provides on-call and callback coverage.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
