About The Position

The Nuclear Engineer 1 applies technical knowledge in the area of nuclear analysis including core design and nuclear reactor physics, with application to methodology development, software and analysis, integration with safety analysis, and regulatory interfaces.

Requirements

  • A minimum of B.S. degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering from a four year accredited college or university is required.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant professional experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing engineering design processes to design and analyze nuclear fuel is required.
  • Eligible to work under Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.

Nice To Haves

  • An M.S. in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering is preferred.
  • An advanced degree in Nuclear, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering may be considered in lieu of work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform safety analysis calculations using industry-standard fuel thermal-mechanical simulation tools such as SIMULATE5, MCNP6, or equivalent industry codes.
  • Apply technical knowledge and experience in nuclear analysis concepts to support design, analysis, and licensing of the NuScale small modular nuclear reactor.
  • Support technical development of licensing technical or topical reports, the safety analysis report, and other licensing documentation; participate in licensing interactions including interface with the government regulator in areas of technical responsibility.
  • Support methodology development and conduct independent analysis and evaluations in areas of technical expertise to support development of a safe and economical design.
  • Work collaboratively within the Nuclear Fuels organization to ensure design and analysis interfaces are adequately managed, including with fuel design, core thermal-hydraulics, and transient analysis.
  • Interpret scope and project requirements and develop design alternatives. Plan, organize, and perform complex assignments in a team environment.
  • Prepare, check, and review engineering reports, calculations, and other design documents with particular emphasis on reactor physics. Provide resolutions to an assortment of problems of moderately complex scope that require creativity and innovation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
