This position is 40hrs, weekend and holiday requirement, opportunities available at MGH main campus The MGB Cancer Institute is seeking a full-time Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Infusion Unit and ambulatory practices at Mass General Hospital in Boston, MA. The Infusion Unit APP Specialist will work in a recently developed role embedded within our adult infusion unit to serve as an infusion unit first responder, promote infusion services access and efficiency, provide oncology urgent care/symptom management and provide generalist coverage within our ambulatory solid tumor disease centers or hematologic malignancies programs for anticipated leaves and absences. Join a large and supportive ambulatory oncology and infusion service line Advanced Practice Team in a role that specializes in the care of patients with a variety of medical oncology diagnoses. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider will promote a collaborative relationship between providers, professional nurses, research personnel and administrative staff, to provide safe, quality care in compliance with clinical trial protocols across the care continuum. The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a licensed provider. The NP is responsible for assessing and managing various patient populations, including those with medical and/or surgical conditions, as well as providing diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, developing appropriate plans of care, and conducting ongoing evaluations.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or Master’s Degree from a NCCPA accredited PA program required
  • Current licensure in the commonwealth of Massachusetts as a certified NP/PA required
  • If NP, certification may be Adult, Acute or Family Nurse Practitioner
  • If PA, national certification by the NCCPA
  • DEA and MCSR is required
  • ACLS certification is preferred
  • Experience as a Nurse Practitioner 0-1 year preferred
  • Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
  • 3 years’ APP experience in oncology is preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Solid tumor generalist experience is preferred.
  • Prior oncology RN experience is preferred for NP applicants.
  • Proficiency with Epic and EMRs preferred.
  • EPIC In-basket management, telemedicine experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with clinical trials preferred.

Responsibilities

  • While on the adult infusion unit, the APP oversees the care of patients with hematologic and oncologic disorders, serves as a first responder for acute reactions and medical emergencies, partners with primary disease center providers to care for complex oncology patients awaiting hospital admission and collaborates with the Cancer Institute weekend first responder team to provide access for urgent evaluation and symptom management during off-hours.
  • The NP/PA is also responsible for collaborative care of the patient with benign hematological disorders receiving care in the adult infusion unit.
  • While in the cancer institute ambulatory practices the APP Specialist is responsible for the care of oncology patients in the outpatient setting, specializing in either solid tumor malignancies or hematologic malignancies in partnership with primary disease center APPs, physicians, practices nurses and administrative support team members.
  • Flexibility in scheduling as this position may require weekend, holiday and evening coverage as well as variable weekday assignments.
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and education to a designated patient population in ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural settings.
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  • Consistently provides high-quality and timely documentation, including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions in accordance with organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
