About The Position

The Certified Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Hematology Oncology Department at the Department of Veterans Affairs provides comprehensive medical services to veterans, focusing on quality care and the advancement of the VA mission. This role involves advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management of patients with acute and chronic health conditions, particularly in hematologic and oncologic diseases. The NP is expected to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team and exemplify the core values of the VA.

Requirements

  • A post-master's certificate or master's or doctoral degree as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Active, current, full, and unrestricted APN license to practice as an NP in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the U.S.
  • Full and current board certification in an area of clinical specialty from a recognized certifying body.
  • At least two years of oncology experience, particularly in chemotherapy administration and managing side effects.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a community-based outpatient clinic setting.
  • Familiarity with VA healthcare policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Independently manage a panel of patients with acute and chronic health conditions.
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with the Oncology Section using virtual modalities.
  • Emphasize evidence-based practice in the management of hematologic and oncologic diseases.
  • Demonstrate leadership and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Order and interpret labs, tests, and diagnostic studies for staging and monitoring of diseases.
  • Prescribe pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
  • Initiate referrals and consults to specialty services.
  • Provide education to patients and their families regarding treatment plans.
  • Assess and adjust the plan of care to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Maintain proficiency in managing complications of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
  • Perform bone marrow biopsy/aspiration procedures when indicated.
