About The Position

Responsible for preparing and staining tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by a Pathologist. In doing so, processes specimens by performing frozen sections, embedding tissue into paraffin blocks, performing microtomy to section tissue, selecting optimal tissue sections by floating them onto glass slides and staining or treating tissue sections with reagents so as to reveal specific structural details during microscopic analysis. Position is responsible for operating and the general maintenance of laboratory equipment in addition to the preparation and utilization of laboratory solutions and reagents as needed to histologically process anatomic tissue specimens. Position requires attention to detail, knowledge of the chemical rationale of the staining procedures performed, and the skills required to recognize and remedy technical difficulties encountered with the processing of tissue samples.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent and a combination of at least 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry (at least 6 credit hours of each) from a regionally accredited college/university; or successful completion of a NAACLS accredited HT or HTL program.
  • One year of Laboratory experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate Degree or Bachelor Degree in a science related field and qualified to complete a NAACLS accredited HT or HTL program.
  • One year full time experience in a Histology Laboratory.
  • Analytical skills necessary to interpret and determine appropriate specimen preparation method, and to evaluate suitability of slides and stains produced.
  • Ability to work on several projects at one time with good organizational skills, judgment and technical skills.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively and communicate with patients and other health care professionals.
  • High level of professionalism and skillful performance in stressful situations.
