Our Hospitalist team is seeking a Full Time (40 Hour) Nocturnist Physician Assistant. The PA will support physicians, collaborate with consultants, nurses, case managers, rehab providers, and others to provide high-quality, efficient care for Hospitalist Service and Short Stay Unit patients. This role consists of 13-hour overnight shifts (7:00 PM – 8:00 AM), with a requirement to work every third weekend and participate in a rotating holiday schedule. The position is based on the NWH main campus at 2014 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02462. The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, medical and/or surgical, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care and ongoing evaluation. May also perform additional duties, such as precepting a small group of learners.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree Physician Assistant required
  • Physician Assistant [State License] - Generic - HR Only required
  • 2 years of experience as a PA required

Nice To Haves

  • Inpatient medicine experience as a PA preferred
  • Epic experience strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Caring for patients on the Short Stay Unit and the inpatient med/surg floors
  • Completing initial patient evaluations, inclusive of obtaining a history, completing medication reconciliation, performing an exam, reviewing diagnostic testing, and documenting an H&P as well as entry of admission orders
  • Monitoring patient progress and coordinating treatment plans with supervising attending, consultants, and providers in other disciplines
  • Documenting subsequent encounters through completion of progress notes
  • Performing procedures in accordance with clinical privileges
  • Discharging the patient from the hospital, including: o Performing discharge medication reconciliation o Coordinating discharge care plan, including follow-up with Primary Care Provider and/or subspecialist as needed to ensure safe care transitions
  • Providing education to patients, and family members, regarding their illness, medications, nutrition, diagnostic tests, procedures, care plan, and post-discharge care
  • Triaging patients from NWH ED as well from outside hospitals
  • Collaborating with nurses, hospitalists, and other providers to accept patients, as appropriate, from NWH ED, outside hospital EDs, and outpatient clinics
  • Communicating with accepting providers to ensure a smooth transition
  • Cross-covering non-house staff and Short Stay Unit patients during evening hours
  • Participating in Short Stay Unit, hospital medicine and hospital-wide process improvement, quality and safety projects
  • Assisting in quality assurance, quality and process improvement and patient safety initiatives within the Hospital
  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.
  • Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
  • Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.
