The Contra Costa County Public Defender relentlessly defends and advocates for low-income people charged with crimes in Contra Costa County by providing holistic defense. Beyond traditional public defense, which includes representation for pending misdemeanor and felony charges, we also engage in post-conviction representation in numerous categories of cases seeking review and resentencing for prior disparate sentencing, as well as for cases lacking conviction integrity or compromised by procedural concerns. All of our clients are indigent, many are mentally ill and have experienced trauma and housing insecurity. The Public Defender clients are some of Contra Costa's most vulnerable and underserved community members. In addition to our litigation inside of the courtroom, we strive to expand access to justice and further community stability for thousands of community members each year and support long-term improvements in justice system practices. We achieve this through our holistic defense approach, that features a wide array of specialized programs, units, and partnerships. The VISTA project's focuses on developing systems to collect and analyze data and prior history to related to law enforcement practices and outcomes in the criminal legal system. The data and information the VISTA gathers, organizes and analyzes will allow effective advocacy in individual cases, as well as strategic litigation to effect change more broadly to increase access to transparency and accountability.
