Founded in 2013, the Jefferson County Public Defender's Office's mission is to provide the best possible legal defense to our clients and to promote the rights of all indigent criminal defendants in Alabama. We serve the metropolitan Birmingham area, the largest economic center in the State and one of the most violent jurisdictions per capita in the United States. The goal of this project is to ensure that the Public Defender's Office is collecting meaningful data and using it wisely, to identify trends and opportunities that are not visible to us in the day-to-day representation of our clients. The VISTA will design and develop a data system with both internal and external applications and will pursue projects that enhance our institutional capacity, strengthening internal practices related to client services. Short term projects will focus on tracking pretrial custody, identifying health needs of our clientele, and analyzing charging trends of the local prosecutorial agencies. Medium- and long-term projects will include enhancing internal process analysis, providing new insights for our staff and pursuing data-based partnerships with aligned organizations. Ultimately, we want to provide a unique perspective on criminal justice in Birmingham and use the information we gather to enhance internal planning and data-informed decision-making to improve service capacity.
