About The Position

We are looking for a new Night Auditor & Porter (Hybrid) for The Hotel Zags. Stylish, inviting, and convenient to lively local attractions, The Hotel Zags is an oasis all its own, offering a hospitality experience enlivened by natural beauty and the quirky culture of the city around it. Boutique in size and independent in nature, The Hotel Zags is located in the Fountain District, a hidden gem of Portland's downtown district. From its vibrant color schemes, modern furnishings, and large picture windows that perfectly frame views of the city and the hotel’s courtyard, the hotel brings the outdoors inside. Designed with stone-covered walkways, the hotel entrance is also framed by a Living Wall robust with plant life to mirror the nearby Columbia River Gorge. Though the property has a style and energy all its own, The Hotel Zags is all about the city around it. Job Overview The Night Auditor & Porter (Hybrid) The Night Auditor & Porter (Hybrid) plays a vital role in maintaining the safety, cleanliness, and operational readiness of the hotel during overnight hours while supporting front desk and audit functions on designated shifts. This position ensures a seamless transition between overnight and daytime operations. On porter-focused nights, responsibilities include conducting routine property rounds to ensure safety and security, maintaining cleanliness of public areas, preparing early morning breakfast service, and stripping and preparing guestrooms for housekeeping. On audit-focused nights, the role is responsible for completing nightly financial audits, balancing and reconciling accounts across departments (including front desk, rooms, food and beverage, and retail outlets), and generating accurate and timely reports. This function ensures compliance with company policies and helps safeguard against discrepancies and fraud. Across all shifts, this position delivers professional and courteous guest service by assisting arriving, departing, and in-house guests; responding to telephone and in-person inquiries; managing reservations; and addressing guest needs and concerns promptly and effectively.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to operate personal computer, cash register and calculator.
  • Ability to compile facts and figures.
  • Telephone and guest relations etiquette and skills.
  • Moderate hearing required to communicate with guests.
  • Excellent vision required for viewing of CRT screen.
  • Excellent speech communication skills required to communicate with guests over the telephone.
  • Excellent comprehension and literacy required for reading daily reports, numbers, etc.

  • Accounting background preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform nightly audit functions, including balancing, reconciling, and reporting on all hotel revenue centers (front desk, rooms, food & beverage outlets, and retail) to ensure accuracy, compliance with policies, and proper cash handling procedures.
  • Review, post, and adjust guest accounts, including room charges, taxes, deposits, and discrepancies; resolve errors and finalize all audit reporting.
  • Complete end-of-day processes, including balancing bank ticket codes and running the night audit to ensure all revenue is accounted for.
  • Prepare daily financial and statistical reports to provide leadership with an accurate summary of hotel performance.
  • Provide front desk support during overnight hours, including guest check-in and check-out, reservations, and handling phone (PBX) operations such as wake-up calls and guest inquiries.
  • Deliver prompt, professional, and courteous service to all guests by responding to requests, resolving concerns, and maintaining a strong knowledge of hotel operations and local information.
  • Conduct routine property patrols to ensure the safety and security of guests, staff, and hotel assets; identify and report any suspicious activity, safety concerns, or maintenance issues.
  • Maintain cleanliness and presentation of public and back-of-house areas, including lobby, restrooms, hallways, and outdoor patio spaces.
  • Prepare, set up, and service early morning MEPS “Shippers” breakfast , including preparation, service, and full cleanup/reset of kitchen and dining areas.
  • Support housekeeping operations by stripping trash and linens from designated checkout rooms to ensure efficient room turnover.
  • Follow all sanitation and food safety standards during food preparation, service, and cleaning activities.
  • Assist guests with luggage and proactively engage with guests throughout the property, offering assistance and acknowledging guests in public areas.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, strong communication, and sound judgment in all interactions; respond effectively to emergencies and unexpected situations.
  • Work collaboratively with team members across departments to ensure smooth hotel operations and a seamless guest experience.
  • Take initiative to resolve guest concerns and exceed service expectations through empowered decision-making.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall hotel operations.
