Newton is a global investment management firm owned by BNY, with a strong presence in major financial hubs including London, New York, Boston, San Francisco, and Tokyo. The firm specializes in providing investment services to a diverse range of institutional clients, such as US and global pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, central banks, endowments, foundations, insurance companies, registered mutual funds, and other pooled investment vehicles. Additionally, through BNY Investments, Newton extends its services to individual investors. The firm employs an active, multidimensional, and engaged approach to investment management, aiming to deliver attractive outcomes for its clients. The Portfolio Manager - Small Cap role is a key position within the Equities Investment team at Newton, located in Boston, MA, and operates in a hybrid work environment. The successful candidate will serve as a generalist long-only junior portfolio manager with a specific focus on small-cap investments. This role requires the ability to self-select securities that are influenced by interest-sensitive business models. The team expects the candidate to develop a number of original and analytically rigorous investment theses each year, which will be considered for inclusion in the portfolio(s) over a 3-5+ year horizon. The candidate will also contribute to portfolio construction and engage with clients for marketing purposes. To excel in this position, the candidate must possess an aligned investment philosophy, particularly one that seeks opportunities amidst controversy. The focus is on identifying quality businesses that may have fallen out of favor and making informed judgments about their potential recovery. The ideal candidate will be a problem solver, capable of lateral thinking and constructing original angles on potential investment theses. A genuine team player, the candidate should be eager to collaborate with other teams across Newton's investment function and be comfortable trusting others. Exceptional communication skills are essential, as the candidate will need to present ideas thoughtfully and engage in debates about investment strategies, both internally and externally. A strong academic record is required, and a CFA designation is desirable.
