As part of this bold expansion into Los Angeles, we are looking for a hungry breaking news Reporter to join the California Post team. Reporting to the Deputy News Editor, the General Assignment Reporter will have a focus on breaking exclusive stories and covering major events unfolding in Los Angeles and beyond. From delivering exclusive, engaging, agenda setting stories to covering wildfires, celebrity scandals, local politics, crime, courts and viral moments, this reporter will be on the front line of our coverage in one of the country’s most dynamic and newsworthy cities.

Requirements

• 1–3 years of experience writing or editing for a fast-paced digital newsroom.
• Strong news judgment with the ability to spot engaging stories quickly from multiple sources.
• Ability to write and reframe stories clearly, accurately, and with a compelling angle.
• Proven ability to work on tight deadlines and manage multiple stories at once.
• Familiarity with using a CMS (WordPress or similar) to publish clean, accurate copy.
• Comfortable monitoring news wires, social platforms, and other outlets to identify emerging stories.
• Solid understanding of SEO best practices and how to optimize headlines and copy for search.
• Ability to verify information quickly and ensure accuracy when aggregating from multiple sources.
• Clear, strong writing skills — clean, concise, and fast.
• A collaborative mindset and ability to work closely with editors in a high-velocity environment.

Nice To Haves

• On-camera experience or willingness to appear on video is a plus.
• Strong social media presence or interest in audience engagement is a plus.
• Spanish or other language fluency is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Deliver exclusive stories and cover breaking news across Los Angeles that drive engagement and audience for the California Post.
• Write fast, clean, and compelling copy that aligns with the Post’s distinctive voice and style
• Spot stories that will resonate nationally, especially ones with viral or exclusive potential
• Develop sources across city agencies, emergency services, and local communities to get the inside track on stories
• Monitor court filings, public records, and social media for scoops and trending topics
• Collaborate with editors and fellow reporters to ensure comprehensive and coordinated coverage
• File updates in real time and across multiple platforms, including web, social, mobile, and video
• Uphold the highest journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness, and integrity
