About The Position

The Miami New Times is seeking an experienced and digital-focused News Editor to lead its reporting team in the Miami newsroom. This role is pivotal in managing a team of three full-time news reporters, as well as freelance reporters and photographers, to produce a diverse range of stories. The News Editor will be responsible for overseeing daily news meetings, ensuring that the team can efficiently cover breaking news and trending topics, as well as more in-depth enterprise, investigative, or feature stories that may require extensive reporting time. The editor will also be tasked with creating guides and explainers about local and regional events and issues, ensuring that all stories are well-structured, clearly written, and free of errors. The position requires a strong focus on SEO best practices and social media strategies to maximize the reach and impact of the stories published. In addition to managing the editorial workflow for the news vertical, the News Editor will assign stories to reporters and freelancers, monitor deadlines, and ensure a regular cadence of story output that meets weekly and monthly goals for volume and traffic. Collaboration with the editor-in-chief on planning news coverage and maintaining regular contact with freelancers is essential. The editor will also coach reporters and freelancers throughout the pitching, reporting, writing, editing, and production processes, providing constructive feedback to enhance their work. Building relationships within the community to reflect the diverse voices of Miami is a key aspect of this role, as is participation in special projects such as the annual Best of Miami issue. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in journalism, with at least five years of experience in a newsroom and a minimum of three years managing journalists. A proven ability to lead and inspire a team, along with a keen understanding of data analytics to inform editorial decisions, is crucial. The candidate should possess a deep knowledge of Miami's culture, politics, and community issues, and be committed to producing high-quality journalism that serves the diverse communities of the area.
