About The Position

The Connecticut Humane Society is seeking full-time Animal Care/Adoption staff members to provide hands-on care for animals and assist customers in the adoption and surrender process. Responsibilities include daily care of animals in kennels, cat areas, and small animal enclosures, which involves providing adequate food and water, kennel cleaning, dog walking in various weather conditions, monitoring animal health and behavior, socializing animals, and maintaining necessary records. Additionally, staff will greet visitors, inform them of proper procedures, answer phone calls, and provide basic shelter information. The role also includes basic training and social skills for shelter dogs, animal bathing and grooming, processing animal intake, and attending off-site events as animal handlers. This position requires a weekend schedule and is ideal for individuals who can manage multiple priorities in a busy environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Ability to perform physically strenuous activities, including lifting up to 40 lbs.
  • Experience in a customer service position or shelter environment (1-2 years preferred).
  • Proficiency in computers.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree in animal science or related field.
  • Knowledge of animal handling and experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Daily care of animals in kennels, cat areas, and small animal enclosures.
  • Provision of adequate food and water for animals.
  • Kennel cleaning and dog walking in all weather conditions.
  • Monitoring animals and reporting health or behavior abnormalities.
  • Socializing animals and maintaining necessary animal records.
  • Assisting customers in the adoption and surrender process.
  • Providing information and counseling to customers regarding pet ownership responsibilities.
  • Greeting all incoming visitors and informing them of proper sign-in procedures.
  • Answering phone calls and providing basic shelter information.
  • Working with shelter dogs on basic training and social skills.
  • Performing animal bathing and basic grooming.
  • Assisting with processing animal intake, evaluation, and treatment.
  • Cleaning the shelter and entering information in PetPoint.
  • Attending off-site events as animal handlers and supporting other locations as needed.

Benefits

  • Hourly pay starting at $17.00/hr with possible increases after 90 days.
  • Full-time position with benefits eligibility.
