About The Position

The Newcomer Classroom Assistant supports newcomer students in a core classroom setting by providing native language assistance and helping to implement the teacher's instructional plan. This role is essential in fostering comprehension of academic content and serves as a bridge between students, staff, and families, promoting cultural sensitivity and pride among students.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Proficiency in English and a second language (Dari/Pashto/Farsi preferred).
• No prior experience required, but experience working with school-age children is preferred.
• First Aid certification preferred.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with classroom teacher(s) to provide native language support and instructional assistance in all subject areas for newcomer students.
• Assists teachers in preparing materials, administering tests, and managing paperwork and documentation.
• Implements the teacher's instruction plan and assists students with classroom activities.
• Performs tutoring, both individually and in small groups, to ensure comprehension of academic content.
• Serves as a link between the school and family, providing interpreting and translation services for multilingual students and families.
• Encourages classroom teachers to be aware of and sensitive to cultural differences of students.
• Helps newcomer students build a positive self-image and pride in their culture.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned, including lunchroom/playground duty.
