The H62/H63 Neurology Stepdown Unit sees a diverse pool of medical diagnoses, such as ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, subdural hematomas, status epilepticus/seizures, brain tumors, neuromuscular disorders and spinal injuries. With 16 patient beds, the unit provides care for both neurological medical and surgical patients and is certified as part of the Comprehensive Stroke Center within Cleveland Clinic’s nationally ranked Neurological Institute. Our nursing caregivers specialize in advanced neurological assessment techniques and perform complex procedures including intracranial pressure monitoring, seizure monitoring, lumbar punctures and central/arterial line placement. Serving patients from young adult through geriatric populations, the unit emphasizes early mobility and recovery to ensure both patient and caregiver safety. As an RN Resident on this floor, you will work with fellow caregivers in delivering exceptional care throughout the patient care journey. In this role, you will interact directly with patients and their families, offering the opportunity to enhance their experience and provide healthcare education as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing (ADN or BSN program)
  • Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
  • NIH Stroke Scale certification
  • New grad RN OR less than one year of RN work experience

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a residency core curriculum based on individual learning needs.
  • Perform complex neurological procedures that include intracranial monitor placement, lumbar punctures, blood transfusions, corpak placement, cervical traction placement and central or arterial line placement.
  • Provide direct nursing care alongside a success coach.
  • Establish and/or revise priorities for patient care (acuity of need, patient preference and resource availability).
  • Respond to data indicating risk to patients’ health and initiate action to correct, reduce or prevent risk.
  • Seek supervision, consultation and assistance when unable to perform safely and independently.
  • Document in patients’ medical records.
