The New England National Scenic Trail (NET) is a 235-mile hiking trail that travels from Long Island Sound in Connecticut to the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border. One of only 11 National Scenic Trails in the U.S., the route traverses classic New England landscape features across a combination of public and private land: long distance vistas with rural towns as a backdrop, agricultural lands, unfragmented forests, and large river valleys, all within 10 miles of over two-million people. The Massachusetts section of the NET, also known as the Metacomet-Monadnock trail, was created through Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) volunteer efforts in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, AMC manages the NET in Massachusetts in partnership with the Connecticut Forest and Park Association (CFPA), who manages the NET in Connecticut, and the National Park Service (NPS). The Community Outreach Assistant will report to the NET Coordinator in order to support and host various hiking and volunteer events on the NET. They will work with staff at AMC, CFPA, and the NPS to develop community engagement materials and conduct community outreach.

Requirements

  • Applicant should be well-organized and able to work independently
  • Comfortable with working in an outdoor setting
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in the outdoors and environmental justice
  • Basic graphic design skills
  • Proficiency with GIS mapping software
  • Familiarity and knowledge of the Massachusetts Pioneer Valley area
  • High School Degree, required

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in speaking and writing Spanish
  • At least one year of undergraduate coursework with studies in outdoor recreation, environmental studies, geography, or similar field
  • Personal vehicle, highly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and host community-centered hikes and volunteer programs along the NET in Summer and Fall 2026
  • Develop community engagement materials
  • With support from NET Coordinator, establish partnerships with new organizations and communities
  • Take charge of NET social media outreach and design promotional flyers for events
  • Maintain the Richardson- Zlogar Cabin, including managing the online reservation system
  • Assist with various NET fieldwork projects when needed.
