Responsibilities Position Summary: Performs patient care both in the outpatient and inpatient settings. Duties include surgical assisting, rounding on inpatients, performing follow up and pre-operative visits in the clinic, and similar duties as well as participation in all quality and process improvement initiatives. Position will work weekends on a rotating basis and may include call responsibilities. The Surgical Physician will work in a Neurosurgical practice setting that provides elective Neurosurgery and Emergency Neurosurgery services. Essential Duties: Able to perform and document physical examinations of all patients, adult through the geriatric population. Obtains and documents patient’s medical history. Assesses and documents patient’s and/or family’s psychosocial issues. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Interprets subjective and objective data to formulate a diagnosis. Formulates treatment plans within the NP’s scope of practice. Implements therapeutic interventions when appropriate. Orders and interprets laboratory tests and other diagnostic tests. Provides patient care in the pre, intra and post-operative period. Orders preoperative medications and tests. Able to write preoperative medications and tests. Assists in the management of acutely traumatized patients and cares for minor injuries. First and second assists surgeons in the OR, ie. Neurosurgery, (NP Specialty). Preps and drapes patients in the OR, closes routine incisions. Provides patient care in all settings where the surgeon provides care i.e. OR, NPCU, SSU, ICU, ED, outpatient clinics and the surgeon’s office. Provides counseling/education for patients and families on preventative healthcare. Performs the initial evaluation and management of acutely injured patients in the Emergency Department. Provides discharge instructions to patient and family. Writes and dictates patient discharge summaries. Prescribes medications within the scope of Maine State Clinical Practice. Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Able to manage ventilators, endotracheal tubes, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes; may perform venipuncture, venous cutdown, central venous line insertion/removal, chest tube insertion/removal, temporary pacemaker removal, wound care, lumbar punctures and other procedures as clinically indicated and trained; may administer parenteral fluids and blood products. Provides counseling/education for patients and families on preventative healthcare. Qualifications Education and Experience: Must be Licensed, Registered or certified in the state of Maine Must be a graduate of an accredited physician assistant program; NCCPA certified Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider ACLS and BLS Certification required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Strong written and verbal skills. Additional languages preferred. Basic computer knowledge. Surgical Technical skills. Requirements

  • Must be Licensed, Registered or certified in the state of Maine
