For a 13 month period of time and under the supervision of the Residency Program Director and designees and according to established policies and procedures, the Neurologic Physical Therapy Resident participates in a concentrated post graduate training program in a hospital rehabilitation setting. The resident participates in structured practical experience treating neurologic patients. This role involves treating neurological patients using standard physical therapy procedures such as heat, cold, electricity, ultrasound and exercise. The resident is responsible for treating complex/specialty cases for assigned site(s), evaluating patient’s motor and neurological capabilities, and documenting findings. Additionally, the resident assists patients in rehabilitative exercise programs and instructs them in the use of rehabilitative equipment. Opportunities for research are available for the population served.

Requirements

  • Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) or Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy (tDPT) from accredited college or university.
  • Current license to practice as a Physical Therapist in the State of Michigan.
  • American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) member.
  • 240 hours as Physical Therapy Student or Physical Therapist in a neurologic setting.
  • Analytical skills to develop complex/specialized treatment protocols and evaluation procedures, and to develop in-service education for staff as well as initiate clinical research for the population we serve.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with agitated and/or depressed patients, and to interact effectively with patients, staff and various levels of management personnel.
  • Technical knowledge of current treatment techniques associated with physical therapy.
  • Training skills to provide staff mentoring and education.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide expert level of performance in evaluation and treatment of patients, and expert level of customer service.
  • Physical stamina required to lift equipment, lift and reposition patients, and stand and work continuously.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in a concentrated post graduate training program in a hospital rehabilitation setting.
  • Participates in structured practical experience treating neurologic patients.
  • Treats neurological patients using standard physical therapy procedures such as heat, cold, electricity, ultrasound and exercise.
  • Responsible for treating the complex/specialty cases for assigned site(s).
  • Evaluates patient’s motor and neurological capabilities and documents findings.
  • Assists patients in rehabilitative exercise programs.
  • Instructs patients in the use of rehabilitative equipment such as braces, splints, and ambulation aides.
  • Participates in research opportunities for the population we serve.
  • Administers and interprets a variety of tests to evaluate the motor and neurological capabilities of patients.
  • Documents patient treatments, initial evaluation, progress notes and discharge summaries in accordance with departmental policies and service line protocols.
  • Co-signs notes written by physical therapy assistants, aides and/or students.
  • Develops home care programs for patients and provides instruction to families during hospitalization and upon discharge.
  • Provides staff mentoring and develops/implements educational in-services for staff.
  • Attends interdisciplinary meetings and various conferences to report on patient’s progress.
  • Consults regularly with other service line team members regarding patient treatment.
  • May oversee, instruct and evaluates physical therapy assistants, aids, students and/or volunteers, as assigned.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of equipment and supplies in assigned treatment areas.
  • Recommends the purchase of supplies and/or equipment, as needed.
  • Assists in the implementation of programs and services to foster an interdisciplinary approach and a service line system of care.
