About The Position

The Neurodiagnostic Tech Apprentice position is designed for individuals enrolled in a North Carolina-based Electrodiagnostic Technology (EDT) program. This role provides on-the-job training under the supervision of experienced staff at UNC Medical Center, focusing on the monitoring and care of patients undergoing neurodiagnostic procedures. The apprentice will assist with various tasks, including patient monitoring, equipment maintenance, and documentation, while gaining practical experience in the field.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in a North Carolina-based EDT program.
  • Must be certified in BLS and seizure first aid.
  • Candidate must have completed coursework in Instrumentation and Recording Methods, Clinical Correlates, and Laboratory Practice I.
  • General technical supervision by a Neurodiagnostic Technologist I or above is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in patient monitoring is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors patients undergoing video EEG monitoring for safety in the EMU Technologists Workroom.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of monitoring system and camera controls.
  • Alerts nursing and/or technologist staff when clinical seizures or other paroxysmal events occur.
  • Communicates with patients and bedside staff to obtain relevant histories and information about events.
  • Documents observations and inputs any relevant information as appropriate.
  • Maintains equipment and ensures that all equipment is in working order according to department protocol.
  • Troubleshoots basic problems with equipment and escalates for resolution if unable to resolve the problem.
  • Completes hospital training to alert supervisor and/or activate hospital systems when encountering patient clinical issues.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned, including restocking supplies, removing electrodes, disconnecting patients, setting up machines, and disinfecting equipment.
  • Measures, marks, and applies electrodes with oversight until proven competence.
  • Prepares reports and documentation according to department processes.
  • Independently completes EDT studies after demonstrating proficiency.
