The Neuro Trauma ICU RN provides leadership, facilitates the delivery of professional nursing care for patient comfort and well-being, and utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide, delegate, supervise, and document patient care and teaching. The role implements medically prescribed interventions. The unit has 20 beds (currently 16 about to go to 20), and the ratio is 1:2 and occasionally could be 3 depending on staffing needs. The patient population is trauma and neuro, and the unit experiences a seasonal census: higher in summer and fall. Patients are on life support, titrating drips, and acuity is much higher than trauma care. The team-based nursing model in this unit requires a lot of walking and teamwork to cover everyone. The unit also does Multi-disciplinary rounding, which is nurse-driven rounding of all clinical providers and care team at one time discussing patient and status-depends on provider availability-Mon-Fri. Patient length of stay is 3-5 days, and patient transfers most often go to TCU or Neuro. The Neuro Trauma ICU RN must be able to handle a very busy, fast-paced unit.
