About The Position

Are you a specialized Neuro-Optometrist with expertise in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation and a desire to serve those who have sacrificed for our nation? Join the interdisciplinary care team at the Intrepid Spirit Center at Fort Cavazos, TX, where neuro-visual rehabilitation is at the heart of TBI recovery. We are seeking a Neuro-Optometrist to provide comprehensive visual rehabilitation services in support of the Defense Health Agency.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited optometry school.
  • Board certification in neuro-optometry
  • Active certification from the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry (ABCMO) in medical optometry, including specialization in areas such as ocular disease, retinal disease, and glaucoma.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Neuro-Optometrist.
  • As required to meet clinical competency requirements specified in the credentialing instructions.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a 10-digit NPI.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and treat visual problems related to neurological conditions and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), retraining and strengthening neural connections in the brain to improve binocular vision.
  • Provide initial comprehensive vision examinations including full evaluation of external and internal eye health, oculomotor control, eye teaming, stereopsis, binocularity, and visual field analysis.
  • Perform extended sensorimotor analysis including visa graph testing, infrared measurement of eye movements when reading, primitive reflex testing, and eye-hand motor testing.
  • Perform sensory view and electro-diagnostic testing of vision and ocular-motor function, including electro-retinogram (ERG) and electro-oculogram (EOG).
  • Assess vestibular performance, inner ear function, proprioception, balance function, vestibular-ocular reflex function, and sensory integration function.
  • Develop individualized patient-specific rehabilitation programs and techniques; provide training to patients and family members on the best methods to encourage recovery.
  • Design and provide individualized neuro-visual therapy sessions including procedures, exercises, activities, perceptual and logic games to increase visual awareness, efficiency, processing, and visually guided movement.
  • Develop treatment plans using corrective lenses, prisms, filters, patches, vision training computer software, therapeutic pharmaceutical agents, and medical contact lenses.
  • Mentor in the area of neuro-optometry; instruct therapists on proper diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, equipment, timing, and milestones of success.
  • Document and close notes in MHS Genesis
  • Respond to beneficiary messages in the MHS Genesis secure portal
