The Network Specialist for the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) is a highly technical and analytical role that requires an in-depth understanding of Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Wide Area Networking (WAN), and Local Area Networking (LAN). This position is crucial for ensuring the security, integrity, and continuity of data networks that support law enforcement operations across the state. The Network Specialist will report directly to the Network Manager II and will supervise a team of Network Analysts responsible for maintaining the network's health and accessibility, which is vital for the success of the NCSHP's mission. In this role, the Network Specialist will be involved in the planning, design, engineering, installation, and troubleshooting of all data communications offerings for the NCSHP. This includes both wired and wireless networks, delivered through various mediums such as copper wiring, fiber optics, and RF circuits. The specialist will coordinate activities with direct managers, end-users, equipment vendors, telecommunications companies, and electrical contractors to ensure the effective design, installation, and support of both new and existing systems. The position also entails interfacing with end-users and external carriers to diagnose and troubleshoot data path issues from the network perimeter to the endpoint. A comprehensive knowledge of modern networking methodologies, including network management and troubleshooting software, routers, switches, VPN tunnels, and network cabling, is essential. The Network Specialist will provide mission-critical information and connectivity to law enforcement officers throughout North Carolina while ensuring the integrity and security of criminal justice information and associated systems. Additionally, the Network Specialist will participate in long-term strategic planning for network expansion, systems integration, and technology refreshes within the NCSHP IT Enterprise. This is a full-time position requiring 40 hours of work per week, with the possibility of working nights and weekends during maintenance or outage situations. The role is also subject to emergency callback at any time during employment.
